Over the last few weeks, Jelka Plate has been working on a 1.20 x 2 meter replica model of Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum. At the same time, she invited members of staff from the nearby workshop of Modelpark Berlin-Brandenburg to discuss the activity of building models. In their workshop, these workers, who are employed as part of a state job creation scheme, construct scale-replicas of landmark Berlin buildings. These models are then displayed in the Model Park’s open-air exhibition in the Wuhlheide area of Berlin, where they can be viewed by the public.
How can reality be captured in a model? And how does this representation in turn affect people’s perception of reality? Is working on a model itself actually the model for ideal work?
From 5 PM onwards this Sunday, visitors can take a walk through the Skulpturenpark site and compare the model with reality for themselves, and can also listen to the conversations that Jelka Plate had with the workers from the model-building workshop. From 6.30 PM onwards, “Notes from Wonderland II” will take place. Jelka Plate will speak about the model as a model, as an archive, as a medium, and as work.
